COVID-19: The Perfect Storm for Startups

For the last 3 months, not a day passes without mention of Covid-19 – the bad, the ugly, and the occasional heart-warming tales of the good where humanity triumphs.

Everyone is impacted to a degree, we speculate about the new normal, we predict when life as we know it will resume again…and the list goes on.

On the start-up scene, the main motto is on the survival of the fittest. For every problem, there is a solution. And for the real innovators out there, this is the time to really make a difference and disrupt the world for the better. This crisis serves as the natural filter where the true gems will emerge as winners – as history assures us. Think GE, Microsoft, Uber, and Airbnb as examples of companies that were founded or grew through previous crises.

Earlier this month, the European Startup Prize for mobility announced the top 50 mobility start-ups.

It will be interesting to see which of these will emerge as top 10 and how these 50 start-ups will forge through this year and beyond. More than that, if past record proves right, this would probably be the perfect storm for the birth of truly great companies in this generation. This might just be the tipping point for many to dive into the world of entrepreneurship – after all, the job market doesn’t look too inviting at the moment, does it? Quoting Bernhard Schroeder in his article in the Forbes, the usual excuses (of not starting a company) no longer matter!
